Roosevelt Choirs Fall Concert

Intermediate Mixed Chorus

Howdidow, Deediddleumday (Leatherwing Bat)
English folk song, arr. by Vicki Tucker Courtney
Leatherwing Bat is the original name of this traditional folk song. Folklore has always thought of the animals with human characteristics, including the power of speech. Even Mark Twain once commented that there was no question about the ability of animals to talk to each other. This folk song endeavors to explain different characteristics of animals by telling a short story of each animals tried-and-failed attempts to find love.
All will be well

words and music by Will Todd
All will be well was commissioned by Simon Wood for Requiem To Cancer in 2018 in aid of Cancer Research UK. The Roosevelt Choirs family has been impacted by this horrendous disease as our own Mrs. Randi van der Sloot has fought cancer on and off for several years. Her strength, unwavering courage, and never-ending zeal for all of life's joys has been an inspiration to us as we have worked through this piece. The work was premiered at St Paul’s Covent Garden, London on 14th September 2018.
The Rhythm of Life

lyric by Dorothy Fields and music by Cy Coleman
The Rhythm of Life is a song from the 1966 Broadway musical, Sweet Charity. In 1969, the Supremes and the Temptations covered the song for their Broadway television special and album.

Freshman Chorus

Be the Change

words adapted from Gandhi and music by Marc Kaplan and Colin Britt
Soloist: Shayne Stephens-Hartmann

Composer, Marc Kaplan, was asked to commission a piece for an All-County Choir, and as he was thinking about being the best version of himself, Ghandi popped into his head and he said the melody wrote itself in five minutes.
O Sifuni Mungu (All Creature of Our God and King)

Soloists: Natasha Wahle, Sydney Venekamp, SageLynn Culley, Madisen Butcher
Small Group: Sadie Fisher, Lauren Howell, Lily Tetzlaff

She Sings...

words and music by Amy F. Bernon
A haunting, whimsical original, almost folk-like in nature, possessing lyrics about a child who loves to sing during the day while playing, and at night “cries for those who have never loved and for those who never sing.”

Riderchor & Melodia

Come Travel With Me

text and music by Scott Farthing
Inspired by Walt Whitman's Song of the Open Road, Come Travel with Me is a very popular piece for both unisex and mixed choirs. Scott Farthing's setting opens with a flourishing piano part and tenors introducing his now familiar melody. The voices beckon to a friend to join them on what promises to be an epic and eye-opening journey.
Wannabe (As an English Madrigal)

words and music by Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Melanie Brown, Victoria Adams, Melanie Chisholm, Matthew Rowebottom and Rischard Stannard, arr. by Nathan Howe
Wannabe is the debut single by English girl group the Spice Girls. The lyrics, which address the value of female friendship, became an iconic symbol of female empowerment and the most emblematic song of the group's Girl Power philosophy. Enjoy this renaissance-style cover!
An Irish Blessing

traditional Irish tune, arr. by James Moore
This blessing was originally an Irish prayer, first written in the Irish Gaelic language, the language of Ireland. Like many texts and tales in the world, it had been translated into English. It lost some of its authenticity when some words had been mistranslated, i.e. “rise” should really be “succeed”. There is no doubt that this prayer is a heartfelt way of wishing someone a good journey, with no obstacles in their path. Of course, this could literally be a journey you’re embarking on, or metaphorically be the journey of life.
Fire

words and music by Sara Bareilles, arr. by Kerry Marsh
Soloists: Rebecca Erickson, Emma Lottman, Maggie Kamnikar, Trinity Tague
Singer, songwriter, Sara Bareilles ponders the end of a relationship and, more importantly, accepts that end. As she reflects on her final moments with a loved one, she realizes that she knew all along that the pair would never catch fire, but she had hoped for so long that they would and refused to give up on its potential. By the end, she realizes that she’s better for having experienced this spark-less love, because now she’ll recognize real heat when it happens.
Duke of Earl

words and music by Earl Edwards, Eugene Dixon and Bernice Williams, arr. Ed Lojeski
Soloist: Gavin Poust
The story behind the song is quite interesting. Earl Edwards and Gene Chandler (his original name was Eugene Dixon) were part of a vocal entertainment group called the Dukays. During warm-ups, the Dukays would get going by singing “Do do do do…” in different keys. During one warm-up, Dixon was goofing off and changed the syllables he was singing to include Earl’s first name. It stuck and eventually morphed into the chant “Du..du..du..Duke of Earl”. It sounded good so they played making a song of it with writer coach and mentor Bernice Williams. They eventually recorded it with the other members of the Dukays.

The Birds' Lullaby

poem by E. Pauline Johnson and music by Sarah Quartel
E. Pauline Johnson (1861 - 1913) was one of Canada’s most popular and successful entertainers at the turn of the 20th century. The daughter of a Mohawk Native-Canadian father and an English mother, Pauline Johnson, at the age of 31 when her society expected her to marry and have children, adopted the name "Tekahionwake," created a Mohawk costume, and began touring Canada giving popular recitals of her poetry, comedy routines and plays. She was the first Native poet to have her work published in Canada, and was one of the few female writers at the time who could make an independent living from what she wrote and performed.
All Star (As an English Madrigal)

words and music by Greg Camp, arr. by Nathan Howe
All Star is a song by the American rock band Smash Mouth from their second studio album, Astro Lounge (1999) made popular for its usage on the Shrek motion picture film. After what must have been a lost wager, Nathan Howe brings new life to the text and melody by setting them in a traditional English madrigal style.

Chorale

Keep Your Lamps!

Spiritual, arr. by Andre Thomas
Keep Your Lamps is a traditional slave spiritual originating in the cotton fields of the Antebellum South. Known as a signal song, it uses the Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins, found in the Gospel of Matthew at 25:1-13, as a textual basis for alerting freedom-seeking slaves that a worker on the underground railroad would be coming soon to help guide them toward eventual freedom in the North.
Four Robert Burns Ballads: 1. A Red, Red Rose

poem by Robert Burns, arr. by James Mulholland
Robert Burns, also known familiarly as Rabbie Burns, the National Bard, Bard of Ayrshire, the Ploughman Poet and various other names and epithets, was a Scottish poet and lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. Red, Red, Rose uses the text from one of his best known poems and sets it to a beautiful and flowing melody, transforming an adoring poem into a full-bodied love ballad.
Ready For Joy

words and music by Brian Tate
This text of this gospel-styled song centers around themes of optimism and hope. It alternates between unison syncopated melodies and 4-voice gospel chords, concluding with a energetic layering of several musical ideas, each taken by a different section in the choir.

Concert Choir

Tres Cantiones Sacrae cum sex, et pluribus vocibus: 3. Alleluia. Laudate Dominum, omnes gentes
Three Sacred Hymns for six and more voices: 3. Alleluia. Praise the Lord, all ye nations

biblical text in Latin: Psalm 116:1, music by Ambrož Čopi
Alleluia.
Laudate Dominum, omnes gentes,
laudate eum, omnes populi.
Alleluia,
[Alleluia.]
O praise the Lord, all ye nations,
praise him, all ye people.
[Alleluia.]
Here

words and music by Joshua Rist
Here is a meditation on the essential questions of identity and a celebration of the moments and environments in nature that evoke those timeless questions. In a world that is increasingly inundated with distraction, "Here" is a reminder to return inward to our true identity and allow ourselves to be once again caught up in the wonder of our own existence and to thoughtfully consider the trajectory of our lives and our collective journey.

Mass Chorus with Special Guests

Amovolovolo

American folk song, arr. by Dwight Bigler
This song was sung in pre-democratic South Africa and tells the story of the people who were afraid to go to Kwa-Mashu, the township outside KwaZulu-Natal, because there was so much violence. Amovolovolo is a direct mutation of the English word revolver. Now, with the violence much less, the song is sung instead as a celebratory act in many communities at parties and weddings, as well as by many choirs in South Africa.
Ngeke siye le la KwaMashu
Sisaba amavolovolo we Ma
Guns make us never go to KwaMashu
they make us stop coming back to it.
